William Wilberforce
Throughout human existence this system of enslaving and controlling people has been a constant companion. It seems overwhelmingly impossible that God’s beloved creatures could be physically set free from the bondage mankind has them in.
This system fundamentally contradicts how God created us: In His image, full of love, free and equal.
Perhaps one of the most famous anti-trafficking campaigners was William Wilberforce who, after decades of campaigning, succeeded in the 19th century in getting slavery banned in the then British Empire, at that point ruled a quarter of the world! He said the following memorable sentence:
We are too young to realize that certain things are impossible…
So we will do them anyway.
We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
